2007 – 2008 A Year of Achievement Community Impact The Junior League of Yakima is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. q Developed a framework and effectively documented the community organizations that have received funds or volunteer service from JLY over the last five years. q Created pilot mentoring program entitled Strong Women Strong Families (SWSF). JLY provided financial support (approx. $15,000) and has provided 8-10 members who are currently active mentors to women with various life challenges. q The SWSF pilot project has also provided our members training and advocacy on the culture of poverty, addiction, boundary setting and the potential impacts of helping to create healthy families. q Increased our community awareness by issuing eight press releases to local media outlets. To date, at least four have been published. Community newsletters have also ran articles submitted by JLY. q Collected over $150 for a YWCA Thanksgiving, read to over 200 children at Adams Elementary, donated 10 bags of women’s career clothing to EPIC, donated six boxes of age appropriate children’s books to EPIC, adopted three families for the holidays at Catholic Family & Child Service, collected money & gift cards for military families, cleaned horse stalls, painted barrels, weeded for Pegasus Project, car seat check and collected books for the Voices For Children Foundation at the Juvenile Court CASA Program. q Participated for the 3rd consecutive year in AJLI’s international initiative to combat childhood obesity, Kids in Kitchen. JLY provisionals coordinated this event and successfully served over 200 children. q Followed up on previous CAF grant recipients to receive status reports to fully realize our community impact. q Reviewed 13 CAF grant applications and selected three with goals most compatible with those of the JLY mission.

Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. q Re-instituted the gifts and memorials program for members who pass on or members who have babies. q Monthly communications were disseminated via the Apple Announcements or the JLY website (e-blasts). Re-formatted the JLY roster. AJLI and JLY websites have current up-to-date member data. q Held fun opportunities for members to gather and spend time together; mystery wine-tasting, downtown Yakima event, cooking class, holiday parties, pottery painting, and bowling are just a few held this year. q Recruited and trained 25 new extraordinary members. q Sent six active members to AJLI sponsored leadership trainings (ODI) in Louisville and Anaheim, sent six women to Northwest Exchange regional leadership training in Boise, sent four board members to various AJLI sponsored leadership trainings and sent four women to Capitol Days in Olympia. q Over twenty members participated in two-part ‘Women in Leadership’ Training series during the year. q Five members were trained to write an effective press release. q Over 35 members attended a legislative reception in October sponsored by JLWS. Representatives Newhouse and Ross and Senatorial Candidate Curtis King attended and held a Q& A session. q Held trainings at two general meetings on the importance of mammography and effective end-of-life planning, created a newsletter column entitled, “Ask Your Pharmacist.” q Secured and set-up a new JLY office computer with an up-to-date database of member information that is more readily available to members.
Fundraising The Junior League of Yakima is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. q Created a long-term financial planning committee to ensure JLY’s fiscal future. q Created a JLY financial policy and procedure manual. q Exchanged over 150 cookbooks with other Leagues to allow members access to other JL books. q Collaborated with Fresh Taste Meals to promote Fresh From the Valley during April. q Collaborated with FRP to provide a holiday cookbook marketplace, 40% proceeds returned to JLY. q Found three new local cookbook vendors and contacted 15 local businesses to purchase books for the holidays. q Raised over $2000 at the Placement Follies auction and donated the proceeds to Camp Fire USA. q Raised over $122,000 from a very successful Case of the Blues & All That Jazz. An increase of $6400 and a net to JLY of $61,400 to further our mission. q Granted $8,500 to Strong Families (parent education), Police Athletic League (prevention program for middle school girls) and Circle of Success (Let’s Read). q Over $10,300 raised for the Sustainer Legacy Scholarship Fund. q Granted two $3,000 scholarships for local women returning to education.
